Have you heard the word workation before? In case you haven't, we will explain to you what it means. A workation is, as it sounds, the merge of work and vacations, an out-of-the-office experience that mixes both work time and leisure time. Doesn’t it sound amazing at first? But well, as everything in life, a workation has advantages and disadvantages.

PROS

  1. Enjoy work life: having the possibility to work from a different place way more interesting than your office or your house will make your life definitely better. Working from a place you enjoy being in will break your routine and help you enjoy work life more than you used to.
  2. Increase in productivity: when changing your work environment at the same time you have the chance to explore new places you will feel more relaxed and this could help bring you a deeper focus and improve in productivity, a change of scenery will for sure leave you refreshed.
  3. Optimize your work hours: while combining leisure and work you can be able to take control of your working hours and organize them in a way that you can be productive and focus on the effectiveness of the hours you will be working so then you could plan and seize the rest of your hours doing leisure activities around you.

CONS

  1. Costs: the costs of taking a workation can be pretty high, often life can get more expensive when you are traveling: flight tickets, transportation, accommodation, restaurants, and the list continues.
  2. Loss of work-life balance: this one is completely up to you, but if you struggle to settle boundaries between work and leisure, the line in between them could get blurred and it can end up being counterproductive when it comes to working.
  3. Visas and work permits: this is sometimes an issue, depending on the country you’re thinking of going on a workation or to work remotely from. The good news is that if you are considering coming and doing remote work in Portugal, the country has a specific visa for remote workers.

If you consider that the advantages are way better than the disadvantages that remote work could bring to you, don’t think about it that much and take the risk. And in case you need accommodation for digital nomads in Lisbon, don’t hesitate to contact us!
